On June 14, 2016 after a year of work preparing the way for the Healthy Freedom campaign to begin, Lila and notable vegans converged on LAUSD to kick off the campaign for Healthy Freedom.
Activist and actress Pamela Anderson, Dr. Michael Klaper, vegan cardiologist and triathlete Dr. Heather Shenkman, vegan dietician Sharon Palmer, champion vegan body builder Torre Washington, community organizer Kawani Brown, and activist Felix Hemstreet spoke to the board about the science and gains behind offering vegan lunch choices to students in LAUSD.
Earlier in the morning Lila and executive chef for Gardein, Jason Stefanko prepared a vegan lunch sampling for the board members and their staff that was a huge hit.
The year that followed brought close collaboration with board members who supported the campaign and staff who directed the creation of the vegan options for lunch. Board president Steve Zimmer was instrumental in steering the campaign to a win at the resolution vote session. Directors of Food Services Laura Benavidez and Joseph Vaughn received the Boards mandate and ushered the plan to success with the support of their amazing staff.
